The 1st June was the starting date of the 2004 London – Sydney Marathon, a key international event for all long-distance rally fans. From London to Sydney, crossing France, Italy, Greece, Turkey and India. Since 1st June, the drivers have been involved in a long, demanding race, a long distance rally that crosses three continents in just one month.
75 cars lined up at the start including the team Vidar Christensen that cooperates with Texa S.p.A. The car is a Peugeot 306, the driver Vidar Christensen and his co-driver Oddvar Moy, are Norwegians with great experience in the rally world. The Peugeot’s bodywork feature the Texa logo and more importantly, the vehicle has been fitted with a TMD (Texa Mobile Diagnostic) unit, which will make it possible to monitor the team: with Texa telediagnosis, the position and electronic situation of the vehicle will always be under control throughout the rally course.
The route includes a number of important legs such as Italy, where drivers can travel along some of the roads that in the past were part of the legendary Mille Miglia race. From Italy, it is on to Greece, where competitors will follow the Acropolis Rally course, then on to Turkey, through the Dardanelli and on to India, to Cochin with air transport aboard Russian Antonovs. In India, the rally will involve six days racing across picturesque landscapes before the competitors bid goodbye to Asia, once again aboard Russian Antonov aircraft, bound for Australia. The adventure across the Australian outback, the most challenging section of the race during which drivers will travel hundreds of km across the dessert and camp in tents, will start in Alice Springs. The finishing line and award ceremony will be in Sydney on the 4th July
Vidar Christensen is a Norwegian driver, class 1948, with decades of experience in the rally and motoring field. Since 1966 he has taken part in many Norwegian rallies, from which he graduated on to the contests and rallies held in Northern European countries ( Denmark, Germany, Holland, Belgium and England). He has participated in the Monte Carlo rally several times, in which he notched up an important victory with his Opel Astra F GSI Gr. N and for several years now he has concentrated on the Monte Carlo vintage rally participating with a VW Beetle. Since 2000, the Norwegian driver has focused his attention on intercontinental rallies, including one of the world’s most challenging races, the East African safari. Le auto con cui partecipa ai rallies sono interamente preparate dal pilota stesso e dal team di meccanici che lavorano nell’officina di Vidar, dove vengono usati da anni gli strumenti Texa. The cars with which he participates in the rallies are entirely prepared by the driver himself and the team of mechanics that work in Vidar’s workshop, where Texa instruments have been used for years. For the London – Sydney rally, Vidar has set up a Peugeot 306 and has built up a racing partnership co-driver Oddvar Moy, another great Norwegian rally expert. In association with Texa and Peugeot, the team will face a tough challenge but is confident that it will succeed, thanks to the reliability of the team and the instruments at its disposal.
